NEWS: GITOBU IMANYARA smiles to the bank as Court awards him 15m for Moi-era DETENTION

Friday the 14th of June 2013 - News just in indicates that the High Court in Nairobi has today awarded former MP, Gitobu Imayara, Sh 15 million for the unlawful detention he suffered at the hands of the Moi Government in the 80s.
The former Imenti South MP was detained for more than two years in a maximum security prison for his association with people who had fallen foul of the Moi government.

Imanyara founded the Nairobi Law Monthly magazine in the late 80s after his detention ended. He continued defending clients being persecuted by the Government.

Also given a cash award in court today was former Githunguri MP Njehu Gatabaki who was awarded Sh 10 million while Bidan Mbugua, a former journalist, was awarded Sh 7 million.
The pair also suffered for their views and activities during the Moi era.

There have been a series of such judgments in recent years but the initial joy over the compensation awarded is always followed by complaints that the government is dragging its feet in effecting payment.
